This is definitely a bittersweet story. On the one hand, how wonderful is it to see a video game company reaching out to gay teenagers? In a typically straight-male-oriented sector, it’s pretty amazing to see diversity and acceptance championed.

And then we have the comments that have come since the video has been posted and, well, it kind of proves the point, doesn’t it? Bullying is alive and well among video gamers.

But back to the beginning. Electronic Arts is a huge video game company, having brought the world games like “The Sims” and “Dead Space.” In an effort to throw support behind the “It Gets Better” campaign, the company had some gay employees film a video targeting gay youth. EA is the first gaming company to join the campaign and the video itself is pretty effective.

“At one time, a bully actually physically threatened me and put a knife to my neck,” remembers one employee.

That employee probably didn’t expect what happened next. A slew of anti-gay comments have popped up online. It seems that some gamers have little interest in seeing EA stand up for gay rights.

A sample of YouTube comments for your viewing (un)pleasure:

“This video is disgusting, I’m never buying another EA product ever again, [deleted] homosexual agenda. I urge all parents to keep any EA games from their children to prevent them to be AIDS-spreading, Satan-loving scum.”

“Ever bought an EA game? Then you’re a [deleted] FAGGOT.”

“Homos ruined GAMING.”

I’m not so sure how we ruined gaming or, for that matter, how this video even affects anyone who is not LGBT, either positively or negatively. Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. It seems almost too simple, right? For what it is worth, gaming blogs have praised EA. But the comments there have been no less hate-filled.

“If you want equality don’t call attention to yourselves,” writes someone on Kotaku. “Believe it or not you don’t deserve special treatment.”

“Thats disgusting – Time to boycott EA,” wrote another person on GamePro.

Lucky for us, the more time a homophobe spends in his basement playing a video game, the less time he has to go out into the world and torment gay people. Unlucky for us, they can now direct that homophobia and anger at others online.

Everyone has the idea what homophobia is, a fear/hatred of people attracted and romantically involved with a person of the same sex. It’s a problem that is still present to this day. Despite the fact things have drastically changed in the last 20 years, homophobia still exist - whether it is encouraged from ignorance, traditions or religions.
However, there’s more ignorance and hatred inside and outside the community projected on those who identify beyond the abbreviations of L and G.

Biphobia: “a term used to describe aversion felt toward bisexuality and bisexuals as a social group or as individuals.”
Ever come out as a bisexual, only to have been told that you’re being greedy? To be under the stereotype of promiscuity - expected to sleep with everyone and anyone regardless of that person being a human being capable of falling in love and being in an monogamous relationship?
A friend once told me of a time when she attempted to ask a girl out, and was rejected mainly because my friend identifies as bisexual and that she’s “a disease carrier”.

Transphobia: “…or less commonly, transprejudice and trans-misogyny, referring to transphobia directed toward transwomen, or trans-misandry, referring to transphobia directed toward transmen. Refers to discrimination against transsexualism and transsexual or transgender people, based on the expression of their internal gender identity.
Many transpeople also experience homophobia from people who incorrectly associate their gender identity with homosexuality.”
I had a very good friend at my old sixth form college. When I first met her, she was under a male identity thinking that it would be easier to deal with other people at the college. But half way through the year she decided to come out to me and her other friends as herself. Although some of us were supportive, there were those that began to bully her and make her life hell until one day she got beaten up for wearing a dress. After that attack she had dropped out of college, fearing that it would happen again. We tried to get her to report this attack to the headmaster of the college, but she just refused to do it - thinking that no one would help her.

There are many more who have faced this kind of discrimination from both ‘straight-society’ and from the lgbtq community. Cis-gendered, androgenous, asexuality, those of the 3rd gender, pansexual, queer, queer-gendered, polysexual and even more beyond my knowledge.

I know I can’t speak for everyone since there are so many experiences and feelings I can’t understand from different walks of life, but I know one thing for certain - any discrimination based on a person’s identity and sexuality is wrong.
As a pansexual I was kicked out of a so-called lgbt club for not being ‘gay’ enough. In honesty, since that experience I have become bitter about groups in general who declare that they’re supporters of lgbtq, when in reality they only actually support the homosexual side of the community. Thankfully I have met many individuals who are my friends, regardless of who and what they are, that have prevented me from the belief that everyone in the universe is an utter git. But still the anger caused by ignorance still lingers… sadly there will always be ignorance in the world, alongside hatred and all kinds of negative aspects of humanity…. I just wanted to get this off my chest.

The looming demise of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” personnel policy doesn’t mean the end of two-tiered justice for gay or lesbian service members.

For example, now that the Pentagon will finally be recognizing the existence of such service members in its ranks, it will also as a matter of law and logic be recognizing the existence of same-sex partners or same-sex spouses. But those folks are barred by the federal Defense of Marriage Act from receiving some of the benefits that opposite-sex partners or opposite-sex spouses would receive from the military.

Little Parrot was up for adoption - at the event to find a home - when he was accosted by a small poodle and bit the dog on the leg. Parrot’s foster Dad was in the process of controlling him when a DC K9 officer did the attached photo’s action. The police then felt it necessary to THROW him down a flight of stairs and shoot him in the head. This is outrageous, unnecessary behavior. The police are now insinuating that Parrot bit 3 people, including an officer. This dog was shot dead in a crowd of 10,000 people - with children watching.

Please help us. Events like this hurt everyone in rescue - and every pit bull trying to find a home who is continually misunderstood, mistreated, and pigeon holed. Parrot was a great dog who was taken to work every day by his foster Dad - who loved everyone he met. This a huge loss. Parrot actually had an adoptive family lined up and waiting for him before he was needlessly killed.

Speak up!! Email the DC Chief of Police at cathy.lanier@dc.gov Tell her about your disgust of her officer’s actions and demand justice for Parrot - and for every pit bull dog out there
